Hydro = Water , Ponics = work
Hydroponics is growing plants in inert medium like coco-peat, Perlite, vermiculite and providing essential nutrients through irrigation water ( i.e. Nutrient solution added to irrigation water)
Why Hydroponics ?
Hydroponics is mostly adopted for specific purpose : like large scale and continuous production of vegetables as land preparation is not required . it solves various problems AS BELOW.
- Water scarcity at certain location.
- Labour availability problems or labour cost.
- Undulating land. Tillage not possible with tractor/bullocks
- Soil is not cultivable (Barren Sodic soils-Kutchh).
- Automation of cultivation for efficiency.
- Cultivation on Roof top – terrace gardening or urban farming.
- Recreation/hobby like Living wall.
- Soil-less vegetable requirement like coriander ,mint, basil required for processing .
Benefits
Efficient use of water and fertilizer. Reduces water consumption by around 80-90 %.
Reduced labor cost on land preparation, compost , fumigation and inter-culture – removing weeds.
Can it be done in open ? Without poly-house
These Photographs are from Hills near pune. Lettuce grown in open using grow bags with coco-peat.
Photographs : Serially Lettuce ,Iceberg, Cherry Tomato ,Kale and Brinjal
For Hydroponics you need two things
1) Substrate like coco peat/perlite/vermiculite
Coco -peat is easily available in India and its natural, cheaper than other media
2) Nutrient Solution
How to make nutrient Solution :- Nutrient solution is added to irrigation water to provide essential nutrition to plants. Two separate solutions A and B are made as all fertilizers are not compatible. Mixing sulfates and calcium nitrate precipitates giving solid at bottom of your tank.
