Hydroponics for Indian condition.

by Siraj Pinjari
  Hydroponics :
Hydro = Water , Ponics = work

Hydroponics is growing plants in inert medium like coco-peat, Perlite, vermiculite and providing essential nutrients through irrigation water ( i.e. Nutrient solution added to irrigation water)

Why  Hydroponics ?

Hydroponics is mostly adopted for specific purpose : like large scale and continuous production of vegetables  as land preparation is not required . it solves various problems  AS BELOW.

  1. Water scarcity at certain location.
  2. Labour availability problems or labour cost.
  3. Undulating land. Tillage not possible with tractor/bullocks
  4. Soil is not cultivable (Barren Sodic soils-Kutchh).
  5. Automation of cultivation for efficiency.
  6. Cultivation on Roof top – terrace gardening or urban farming.
  7. Recreation/hobby like Living wall.
  8. Soil-less vegetable requirement like coriander ,mint, basil required for processing .
Benefits
Efficient use of water and fertilizer. Reduces water consumption by around 80-90 %.
Reduced labor cost on land preparation, compost , fumigation  and inter-culture – removing weeds.
Can it be done in open ? Without poly-house

These Photographs are from Hills near pune. Lettuce grown in open using grow bags with coco-peat.
Photographs : Serially Lettuce ,Iceberg, Cherry Tomato ,Kale and Brinjal

For Hydroponics you need two things
1) Substrate  like coco peat/perlite/vermiculite
Coco -peat is easily available in India and its natural, cheaper than other media

2) Nutrient Solution

How to make nutrient Solution :- Nutrient solution is added to irrigation water to provide essential nutrition to plants. Two separate solutions A and B are made as all fertilizers are not compatible. Mixing sulfates and calcium nitrate  precipitates giving solid at bottom of your tank.

Why to go for vertical farming ?

by Siraj Pinjari Vertical structures in hydroponics are used for utilization of space. But vertical structures are costly and what factors should be considered while doing vertical farming. 1) If you are having greenhouse (Polyhouse) its better to utilize the space . The polyhouse is built with purpose of trapping CO2 (carboon di-oxide. Which is 5 times (1500 ppm approx) in morning in a closed greenhouse. It increases the rate of photosynthesis. Utilizing space in such structure becomes economical with higher plant population. In above structure polysterene/thermacol pots are filled with coco-peat ant advisable than growing for NFT (Nutrient film technique)whose maintenance cost is high and not suitable if electricity is not available without break-downs.

Healthy Moong Bean sprouts

Healthy Moong bean sprouts by Siraj Pinjari The long moong bean sprouts are healthy and rich source of protein, vitamins and mineral. They are very nutritious and beneficial for people with Diabetes, weight problem, High Blood pressure and cholesterol. Sprouts have low glycemic index as it contains less of sugar/carbohydrate and more of protein. Growing sprouts has more vitamin C than whole Moong Beans. It is also good source of Vitamin B and Folates.   Its low calorie, low fat  and so useful for people observing Diet for weight loss. Health benefits Its high protein and low carbohydrates , helps fighting diabetes. Its helps lower cholesterol as it contains antioxidants . It contains essential amino acids fulfils requirement of protein. It helps weight loss as it’s a filling food  which satisfy the hunger with low calories due to  low carbohydrate and high protein. Nutrient contents in hydroponics fertilizers .

by Siraj Pinjari For making  Hydroponic nutrient solutions you need following fertilizers .For compatibility issue A and B solutions are prepared . Which are added to Irrigation water to provide all essential nutrients which are N,P,K,Ca,Mg,S and micronutrients Fe, Boron,Mn,Zinc ,Molybdenum and copper. Contents of Nutrient solution : A Calcium Nitrate         Potassium Nitrate    Fe EDTA     Contents of Nutrient solution : B   MgSo4 (Magnesium sulfate)                  MKP (Monopotassium Phosphate)                    K2So4 (POTASSIUM SULFATE )                 Boron                     Zinc                         Manganese   ...
